Puerto Escondido is an amazing little surfing and fishing town in Oaxaca, Mexico. I loved it so much and I know I’ll be going back. I created an up-to-date Puerto Escondido map using Google Maps to use to get around and find the best spots in town, which you can access below!

Every place I have on the map I’ve personally checked into to make sure you will have a great experience. Of course it’s not possible for me to guarantee nothing has changed since I’ve done that research, but at the very least this Puerto Escondido map should be a great starting point for anyone visiting the area. Enjoy!

Important Places on the Puerto Escondido Map

Having a Puerto Escondido map to use for your trip is really important, especially so you can find the most prevalent spots in the town easily. Below I outline some of the best spots to know in Puerto Escondido.

How to Get to Puerto Escondido & Airports to Know

There are two main ways to travel to Puerto Escondido, either 1.) through the Puerto Escondido Airport, which you can fly into from MEX or the new NLU Airport or 2.) on the Barranca Larga-Ventanilla Highway from Oaxaca. I explain in more detail below!

Puerto Escondido Airport

The Puerto Escondido Airport is just ten-ish minutes from the center of town, making it a super convenient way to get to Puerto and an important spot on the Puerto Escondido map! You can fly into the Puerto Escondido airport from either the airport in Mexico City (MEX) or the new NLU Airport.

Tip: The airport is tiny, which is convenient but can mean long lines for check in. To avoid any trouble I would plan to get to the airport an hour and a half ahead of time, as there are two snack bars and plenty of bathrooms + place to sit.

Barranca Larga-Ventanilla Highway : Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido

It used to take three to four hours to drive from Oaxaca, where an International airport is placed (OAX), to Puerto Escondido. Now with the construction of the new Barranca Larga-Ventanilla Highway, it only takes under two hours. This makes it a great way to get to Puerto Escondido. Flying into Oaxaca is often cheaper, and there are buses that leave frequently from the airport and that provide a smooth and safe trip.

You can find the route from Oaxaca to the coast on the Puerto Escondido map highlighted in royal blue.

Where to Stay In Puerto Escondido & Areas to Know

When deciding where to stay in Puerto Escondido there are a few main areas to consider including Zicatela beach, La Punta and Centro.

Zicatela

Zicatela is the center of Puerto Escondido, home to the giant waves the Mexican Pipeline is known for and the best nightlife in the area!

Here you’ll find restaurants and clubs right on the beach under palapas and palm trees, sometimes in the sand and sometimes in multi-level towering wooden structures that look like tree houses. I’ve never seen so many beachfront bars and restaurants in a row and I loved it so much!

Key spots here are Selina hostel and coworking space and, if you’re into nightlife, the XCAANDA, Cañabrava and Chula clubs.

La Punta

On the Southern tip of the Puerto Escondido map you’ll find La Punta, which is the boho hippie neighborhood of Puerto Escondido, with dirt roads, thatched roofs, boutique shops, and live music where artists and backpackers tend to stay. This was my personal favorite place in Puerto Escondido and where I will stay the next time I go back!

Punta is usually the place where people go to start off the night, with delicious eateries, cocktail bars and live music. Because of local laws, the bars close at 11:00pm and the party moves to Zicatela. This makes it a great spot for anyone to stay because you have great options for all hours of the day without the late late nightlife to keep you up. You also have the La Punta beach, which is a great intermediate surfing beach.

Key spots for digital nomads and backpackers are the Nectar hostel and coworking space, the lively Bonita Escondido hostel, Sabina cafe for coworking and the XCAANDA beach club.

Centro & Rinconada

Centro is the center of the Puerto Escondido town where you’ll find most of the town’s banks and businesses, and also plenty of mouthwatering restaurants, particularly in the Rinconada neighborhood. Even better, all the best Puerto Escondido beaches for swimming and hanging out are also closest to Centro. Staying in Centro is all about convenience, and although you have the amazing beaches closest to you, this area is not as lush and beautiful overall.

Important spots for digital nomads and backpackers are the Casa Losodeli Coworking Space & Hostel, Café la Fe which is a great remote work cafe, Banco Azteca where you can change cash, Playa Carrizalillo (Puerto’s most beautiful beach), the Oasis Surf Camp although I’m biased 😉 and the La Isle Beach Club, which is one of the best beach clubs in Puerto Escondido.
